Broken Promises

I know.

I know!

I had great intentions last week. But life changed my plans and blew my intentions to SMITHEREENS.

Is SMITHEREENS a word?

And now, here we are, nearly all the way through another week, and still no pictures. No updates. No reflections on what God is doing. No recipes. (And I do have recipes).

But today, I have a turkey to buy and preparations to make for the Thanksgiving dinner we will be having on Sunday.

SUNDAY?! Yikes!

I have to go to the store right now or we will be having chicken instead.

If you have any brilliant tips on making the most delicious turkey ever, please do share. I love cooking tips. And I love comments. And I love turkey. So please, help this girl with the spinning head and the messy house and pile of laundry and the runny-nosed kids and the empty fridge. She needs it.

We are having my parents, Heather & Adam and Tony's brother over for thanksgiving and we still haven't moved everything out of our other apartment and we're not totally unpacked here. My house is a mess and I haven't even went shopping yet for the Thanksgiving Spread:( Have you ever tried that Turkey cooking in a plastic bag?? Never a Dull Moment...

Here's a little selection of the funny conversations that happen in our house on a daily basis...

During the very chaotic preparations for our trip to Guatemala:
Maya: Whatcha lookin' at Mom?
Me: A map.
Maya: Of what?
Me: Of Guatemala.
Maya: So you don't get lost?
Me: Yep.
Maya: Yeah, because if you got lost and brought home the wrong kid, that would be baaaaaaaaaad.

Human Anatomy, as taught by a six-year-old:
Kaylee: Hey mom--if I had six toes instead of five, I could divide them into two equal groups.

Kaylee: Mom, do you know which team we're playing in tee-ball today?
Maya: I know who it is! It's the, um...the, um....the Tight Sox!

We were outside watering the garden, and Maya was explaining to me how strawberries grow. When she was done with her explanation she said,
"See, Mom, I know all about strawberries. That's cuz I have lots of smartness."
To which Kaylee promptly replied,
"Yeah, you get that from your father."

Insightful sports commentary from a 4 year old and a 6 year old (at the end of the NCAA basketball championship game):
Kaylee (sounding annoyed)--What is going on?
Maya (thinking Kaylee was referring to the confetti falling from the ceiling)--They're happy because North Carolina won.
Kaylee--No. I mean other teams would have had 100 points by now.

(The facts that Kaylee knows that the winning team of a basketball game usually has around a hundred points and the fact that Maya knew the actual name of the winning team are frightening to me. Really.)

We're working on manners around here, I swear...
Me--Who tooted?
Kaylee (giggling)--Me.
Maya--That smells bad.....Good one Kaylee.

We were having french toast for dinner, and Kaylee went to the kitchen to get another piece. When she brought it back to the table, she needed help putting butter & syrup on, so she said:
Can someone help me....um.....decorate this?
(Giggling)
I don't know what the word is for it!

Maya: Mom, does God laugh?
(Short Pause)
I mean, when I do something that's funny, does He
see me and then laugh?

Here's more of the kids' quotes:

While I was making dinner:
Kaylee: Mom, you really need to put more beans in that burrito.
Me: Kaylee, do I make you breakfast, lunch & dinner almost every single day?
Kaylee: Yes.
Me: Do you think I might know what I'm doing?
Kaylee: Yes.
Me: Then do you think it's necessary for you to tell me how to make your dinner?
Kaylee: No....But I don't really know what necessary means.

While I was getting lunch ready, I asked Maya to get the grapes out of the fridge for me. After digging around for a minute, Maya stood up, exasperated, and said:
Mom, there just aren't any more grapes. We're fresh out!

On the way home from the grocery store:
Maya: Mom, when we get home, can I play on the computer?
Me: I don't think so Maya.
Maya: But Mooo-ooooom, I'm huuuuuuuungry!
Me: Hungry? Maya, you asked about the computer...did you forget what you were trying to whine about?
Maya (Giggling): Oh yeah. But can I have a snack when we get home?

Overheard on the day after Christmas, while the girls were playing with their new toy guitar and drums:
Kaylee: Maya, remember, we're gonna rock this place!

Fun with Christmas carols:
Maya: Glo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ree-yah in it's Chelsea's deo....Mom, this song has Chelsea's name in it!

Kaylee: Deck the halls with balls of jolly, fa la la la la, la la la la!

Definitions:
Maya: Mom, when Cameron said that I had to ga-nore him.
Me: Ga-nore him?
Maya: Yeah. I just looked at him and said...(She looks at me wide-eyed with her mouth clamped shut as tight as she can make it)
...nothing. That's ga-nor-ing.

While riding in the car:
Maya: Uh-oh, mom, I dropped my slurpee again!
Kaylee: Maya, it's a frisbee.
Maya: Oh. Mom, I dropped my thurz-bee.
Kaylee & Jeremy (in unison): FRIZ-BEE!
Maya: Okay! Mom, can you help me get my...thingy?

After dinner, I was doing the dishes in the kitchen and the girls were working on cleaning up their room when Maya poked her head into the kitchen:
Maya: Mom, our room's almost done!
She walked away, back down the hall, and then came back:
Aa-aand....it's awesome!

Last week, as we were walking out of preschool:
Maya: Today we got to go to Staples.
Me: Staples? What do you mean?
Maya: We sing songs and listen, and I was very quiet.
Me (confused): Where did you go to sing songs?
Maya (pointing to the church that's at the school): In there.
Me: Oh! You mean chapel!
Maya: Yeah, chapel.

One of my all-time favorite questions from Kaylee (she was 4 at the time):
Kaylee: Mom, do fish have eyelashes?
Me: I have no idea! Why do you want to know?
Kaylee: I was drawing a picture of a fish, and I wanted it to be a girl fish, so I put eyelashes on it.

Smarter than I know...
Kaylee: Mom, Abigail didn't go to my school last year. She went to 'cation Bible school.
Me: What's the name of the school?
Kaylee: I don't really know, but it had "Bible" in the name. That means Abigail's a Christian.
Me: What does it mean if someone's a Christian?
Kaylee (without hesitating for a second): It means you love Jesus and you trust in Him.

Good answer, Kaylee...

Why it's good to have a sister:
Maya: At church today, someone poked me right in the eye.
Kaylee (with genuine concern): Did that make you feel sad inside?
Maya: Yeah...and it really stinged too!
Kaylee: Oh Maya, I know exactly how you feel.

Maya's Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you to please let me get a MP3 player.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen

Overheard while walking up the hill to our campsite after a long day:
Kaylee: My legs are tired.
Maya: So are mine...but I'm not whining about it.

Why I love three year olds:
Maya (In her best pathetic voice): Mommy, my tummy is groooooowling.
Me: How come?
Maya: I think it's hungry...and it's telling me that it needs some cake.

Kaylee's explains why the adoption is taking so long:
"Mom, I think I know why it's taking so long for the papers to be done in Gua-la-mala. I think the people that are working on them are using a pen, and they made a mistake. Then they have to do the papers again...and they are really slow writers."

Geography, according to Maya:
Maya was playing near me while I was watching a news clip on the internet. The reporter was referring to different people and the states they're from, and she named someone from Mississippi, among others. A few seconds later, Maya looked up from what she was doing and asked, "Mom, who's Mrs. Siffy?"

Important theological insights of kids:
Kaylee: Mom, how can Jesus be right here with us all the time?
Me: Well, Jesus is God, so He can be everywhere all at the same time.
Maya: Jesus is a boy, and God is a boy.
Kaylee: Yep, and they both have the same birthday!

Aging, according to a three year old & a five year old:
(While listening to a praise cd in the car)
Kaylee: Mom, this song says we can praise Him when we're young and when we're old. That's right, because Nana's old and she praises Jesus.
Maya: Yeah, but our grandma with brown hair isn't old.
Kaylee: No, she's not. But she's getting there...

A conversation overheard between Kaylee & Maya while eating apple slices:
Kaylee, turning to Maya: "Uno mas"
Maya: "What?!"
Kaylee: "I saaiid, uno mas!"
Maya: "What?!"
Kaylee: "I saaiid, uno mas!"
Maya: "Oooohh, you mean SHIRT."
Kaylee (enunciating very slowly): "No, Maya, Uuunnoooo Maaaaas."
Maya (equally slowly): "Ooooohhhh, MOTH!"
Kaylee (rolling her eyes and with her best teacher tone): "No, Maya. Uno mas. It means one more. I only have one apple left."
Maya: Giggling, still clueless, goes back to eating her apple.

Yesterday, during a family game of four-square, Maya stopped, mid-game, turned to me with her hands on her hips and said, matter-of-factly:
"Mom. Do you see how pretty I look? I am wearing purple flip flops."
